What a transparent background is for
A transparent PNG has no background at all: only the subject is visible, so you can place it on any colour, photo or design without a box around it.
That is what you need for stickers, slides, flyers, thumbnails, website images, social media posts and printing on T-shirts or mugs.
Why JPG images can’t be transparent
JPG files always have a solid background, usually white. Transparency needs the PNG format, which stores an extra “alpha” layer that says how see-through each pixel is.
Upload your JPG here and you get a PNG back, with the background removed and the alpha layer added. Soft edges such as hair keep their partial transparency, so the cut-out blends into whatever you put it on.
